Fire Dragon

SMC-777 1984
Fire Dragon places the player in command of a powerful dragon moving through a hostile underground kingdom. Beyond the stone gates and winding caverns lie treasure chambers, volcanic passages, and the lairs of enemy creatures. The objective is to advance through each area, overcome its guardians, and collect the valuables concealed throughout the maze. Every chamber presents a different arrangement of passages and hazards, requiring careful movement rather than a simple charge toward the exit. The dragon can walk across platforms, climb through connected passages, and release a stream of fire against creatures approaching from either side. The fire attack is effective at close and medium range, but it must be used with care while the dragon is surrounded or trapped in a narrow corridor. Enemies appear from entrances and concealed sections of the cave, while falling rocks, flames, pits, and other obstacles restrict the safest route. Contact with an enemy or hazard costs a life, making the timing of each jump and attack especially important. Treasure is scattered through the playfield in the form of jewels, coins, and other valuable objects. Gathering these items increases the score and may open routes that are otherwise difficult to reach. Some areas require the player to lure a monster away from a passage before moving onward, while others demand a quick dash through a dangerous section before the screen becomes crowded. The advancing dragon must also conserve its opportunities, since a reckless attack can leave it exposed to a second enemy approaching from behind. The SMC-777 display uses bright, sharply defined colors to distinguish the dragon, treasure, enemies, and cavern walls. Dark backgrounds emphasize the orange and red fire breath, while blue, green, and yellow details give each chamber its own character. The screen is arranged for immediate recognition, with platforms and passages clearly separated from the surrounding rock. Simple animation gives the dragon a strong presence as it advances, turns, crouches, and unleashes its fiery attack. Sound effects accompany the principal actions, including movement, attacks, treasure collection, enemy encounters, and the loss of a life. The fire-breathing sound provides a clear signal whenever the dragon’s weapon is active, while the sharper effects of collision and falling hazards warn of danger. The result is a compact arcade-style adventure that rewards observation, accurate control, and repeated attempts. As the passages become more crowded and the traps more demanding, Fire Dragon places increasing pressure on the player to balance exploration, treasure hunting, and survival.
