Another War

Windows 2002
Released in 2002, Another War marked an intriguing entry into the realm of tactical role-playing games, a genre often characterized by its blend of strategic combat and immersive storytelling. Developed by the Russian studio Ellipse and published by 1C Company, this game transports players to a fictionalized version of World War II Europe, where tactical prowess and clever decision-making are pivotal to success. What sets Another War apart is its unique perspective, presenting players with an alternative narrative that blends history with imaginative elements. At the heart of Another War is a robust combat system reminiscent of classic tactical RPGs, allowing players to control a squad of characters with diverse skill sets and backgrounds. This strategic gameplay encourages players to adapt their tactics not only based on their team composition but also in response to the challenges posed by the enemy forces. The environmental design plays a significant role in shaping combat strategies, with various terrains providing both advantages and obstacles. Players must not only think ahead but also anticipate their foes’ movements to achieve victory. Character development is a focal point in this game, providing an engaging experience that keeps players invested. As characters progress, they acquire new skills and enhance existing ones, which opens up a plethora of strategies in approaching various missions. Each character has a distinct backstory and motivations, adding depth to the experience and allowing for emotional investment in the unfolding narrative. This emphasis on character evolution creates a personalized journey as players become more attached to their squad's fates. The storytelling in Another War is another noteworthy element, weaving together historical references with fiction to craft an engaging plot. Through an array of missions, players encounter morally ambiguous situations that challenge their principles and force them to make tough choices. The rich narrative is presented through dialogues and cutscenes that effectively convey the wartime atmosphere, highlighting the complexities faced by the characters as they navigate personal dilemmas while serving a greater cause. Another War, while not widely known compared to some of its contemporaries, has garnered a niche following among tactical RPG enthusiasts. Its combination of strategic gameplay, character-driven storytelling, and a distinctly alternative history makes it an intriguing title worth exploring. As players delve into the intricacies of combat and character relationships, they find themselves immersed in a world that blurs the lines between historical accuracy and creative imagination. This game serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of strategy games and the unique narratives they can offer players.

Bloodline

Windows 2005
Bloodline is a Windows game that arrived in 2005 with a distinctly gothic mood and a promise of supernatural momentum. Even before the first mission finishes, the atmosphere leans toward smoky corridors, uneasy silence, and the sense that every choice has consequences. The title carries itself like a dark saga, not a bright arcade diversion, and it tries to keep you attentive through a blend of narrative beats and practical objectives. What stands out is the ambition: it wants to feel moody, personal, and tactical all at once. The premise centers on a protagonist tangled in a lineage-related conflict where blood, power, and betrayal matter in equal measure. You are pushed through threats that escalate from smaller dangers into larger, more choreographed encounters. Character motivations are presented through interactions and mission framing rather than long cinematic expositions, which gives the story an urgent, lived-in quality. For players who enjoy lore delivered through atmosphere and consequences, the setup feels like it could have come from a broader world, even if the campaign itself remains compact. Gameplay revolves around combat that rewards timing and positioning, with upgrades that nudge your build toward either survival-minded options or more aggressive tactics. You manage equipment and skills as you progress, and the game encourages experimentation with attack styles instead of forcing a single optimal path. Enemies generally telegraph danger in recognizable ways, so learning patterns becomes part of the fun. The structure is mission-based, with objectives that range from clearing areas to reaching targets under mounting pressure. Graphically, the presentation reflects its era: lighting is moody, character models are serviceable, and textures can look soft compared to later releases. Still, the art direction is coherent, using shadow-heavy environments and color choices that reinforce danger. Audio supports the mood through percussion-driven cues and ambient soundscapes that make hallways feel colder than they probably are. Controls are workable, though some players may notice sluggishness during tight turning or rapid spell switching. As a result, Bloodline tends to appeal to gamers who value tone over polish. It is not flawless, but it offers a satisfying sense of progression and a consistent gothic identity. If you are interested in early mid-2000s PC action where atmosphere is treated as a gameplay ingredient, this title is worth a look, especially as a time capsule of how bold, supernatural themes were translated into Windows-era game design.

UFO: Aftershock

Windows 2005
UFO: Aftershock is the sequel to UFO: Aftermath set fifty years later, in the year 2050. Following the life support system on Laputa (read=station or space city), the peoples of Laputa revolted against the Human Council, which attempted to silence their objections. Armed conflict was soon inevitable and the Laputa was destroyed shortly after its engines exploded. The few survivors, who barely made it out alive by escaping in space shuttles, find another deserted Laputa in space. This Laputa is equipped with a landing capsule to Earth, which is rumored to be long lost. Now, he leads the remaining Laputa survivors and re-establishes contact with Earth and the mysteries within. UFO: Aftershock is a tactical real-time strategy/RPG game, following in the footsteps of X-Com. The game revolves around conquering provinces around the world, researching technologies and fighting the various enemies of Earth. Geosphere The Geosphere (political map) allows the player to view and move the Laputa anywhere on Earth. There are 4 different selectable time speeds, from pause to maximum speed. The Earth is divided into 2 (two) different areas. Countries and provinces. Countries, for example France, consist of (according to the game) 5 provinces. The provinces are divided into 2 (two) different types, a capital and a resource province. A capital (one per country) allows the player to access the resources of the provinces of the same country and, above all, allows him to build a base. The other capitals (and the resources surrounding them) are accessible when the player controls that province and builds a road from the initial base in Stuttgart to that province. Resource provinces provide the player with one of the 3 (three) different resources available in the game: Basic Resources, Minerals and Aliens, which are used for maintenance, building creation, weapons/armor and research. Diplomacy The first race the player encounters is the human race, which gives him control of his first two provinces. Soon, the player will meet the Cyborgs and the Psionics. All three races can be traded with for resources and new people to join your ranks. The greater the relationship with any of them, the more resources and better people they will offer you. Helping their provinces when they are under attack or sending resources will improve relations, while ignoring their requests or even attacking them will devastate relations. Later in the game, the player will encounter a few more (hostile) races. Tactical squads The player originally has 4 squad members, which can be increased by recruiting new members from different factions. A single landing squad consists of 5 members, but can later be increased to 7 members. Each member introduces an RPG-style stat system. Members have experience levels, skills and attributes. When a member levels up by attaining enough experience through quests, they can increase a physical or mental attribute (e. g. , strength, intelligence, etc. ) which will, in effect, increase their skills (e. g. , rifles, throws, health, etc. ). If their attributes are qualified, the member may subsequently acquire specialized training, such as Commando, Medic, etc. A member can train up to 3 different types of the 12 available. A training skill can be leveled up three times, allowing unique bonuses for tactical combat.
