Adventure Math

DOS 1992
Adventure Math is a single-player, keyboard-controlled, edutainment title aimed at teaching mathematics through simple addition. The shareware version allows the player to practice addition and subtraction, while the full version, Adventure Math Deluxe, also includes division, multiplication, additional sounds and graphics, and a timer. There are ten difficulty levels that play the same and have a medieval theme. The game poses a series of addition or subtraction questions such as '12 + ? = 54' or '54 - ? = 12' and the player has to type in the correct answer. In this shareware version, the player is not timed. At the end of a round of questions, the student is shown his score, the questions he has missed and is given the option to print a report card. If the player gets enough questions right, he enters the bonus round, in which the questions are in the same format, but the player answers by shooting the correct number from the three choices at the top of the screen. There is an option to print a scorecard, but other than that there is no scoreboard or save game function.

Best of ZZT

DOS 1992
Best of ZZT is a kind of sequel to ZZT and Super ZZT. It is a shareware game that shows what ZZT can do. Epic MegaGames created ZZT with its game worlds and released it along with its level editor and world creation tools. This proved to be very popular and led to the creation of many home worlds that were shared online through message boards. In 1991, Epic held a game design contest to find the best boards and received over a thousand submissions. The boards from this contest were used to create two new game worlds, 'The Secret of Headhunter Isle' and 'Royal Treasures', which Epic released as shareware in 1992 under the name Best of ZZT.

Castle of the Winds

Castle of the Winds is a fun graphical role-playing game designed by Rick Saada and published as shareware by Epic-Megagames. The game contains 2 episodes: the first is titled 'A Question of Vengeance' and is distributed as shareware. The second is 'Lifthransir's Bane' and had a registration price of $25. The game is played from a top-down perspective and, like other Roguelike games, has a huge dungeon 25 levels deep. Your goal in the first episode is to retrieve an ancient helm to rightfully claim the throne that is rightfully yours by birth. Standing in your way is the powerful demon lord Surtur. The gameplay is the same as other Roguelikes. You explore dungeons, avoid or disarm traps, defeat monsters, and find treasures and powerful magic items that will help you fight the demon. The game's graphics are a bit cheesy, but passable for a Roguelike. Actually, the gameplay is deep and immersive. There are hundreds of spells and weapons to use, and plenty of monsters to kill. While far from the level of complexity of NetHack or ADOM, Castle of the Winds is fun, intuitive, and easy to manage. If you like Roguelikes, you'll like this shareware 'lite' game that has recently been released to the public domain by its author. Highly recommended.

Epic Pinball, released in 1993, is a classic PC game that is still beloved by many retro gamers today. Developed by James Schmalz and published by Epic MegaGames (now Epic Games), this DOS game offered players an immersive and addictive pinball experience like no other. One of the standout features of Epic Pinball is its stunning graphics and design. The game boasts eight different pinball tables, each one intricately designed and visually appealing. From the sci-fi themed "Android" table to the medieval-inspired "Excalibur," each table had its own unique layout, colors, and animations. The attention to detail in the graphics truly made each table come to life, creating an immersive experience for players. But what truly set Epic Pinball apart from other pinball games of its time was its physics engine. The developers went to great lengths to ensure that the pinball behaved realistically, giving players a sense of control and satisfaction when hitting targets and scoring points. This attention to detail and realism added an extra layer to the gameplay, making it all the more enjoyable for pinball enthusiasts. Apart from the graphics and physics, another aspect that made Epic Pinball stand out was its diverse and engaging gameplay. Each table had its own unique objectives and challenges, keeping players on their toes and always wanting more. From collecting power-ups to hitting specific targets, there was always something new to discover and conquer in each table. This variety in gameplay made Epic Pinball a game that could be played for hours without ever getting bored. Additionally, Epic Pinball offered multiplayer options, allowing players to compete against each other and compare high scores. This added a competitive element to the game, making it all the more exciting and challenging. With the ability to customize game settings and difficulty levels, players of all ages and skill levels could enjoy this game and keep coming back for more. Epic Pinball's success led to the release of expansion packs, which added even more tables and features to the game.
