Contamination
Contamination, released in 1986 for the Amstrad CPC, is a classic game that combines elements of horror, adventure, and puzzle-solving. Developed by G.J.A. Provijn and published by CP Verlag, this game takes players on a thrilling journey to uncover the truth behind a mysterious contamination in a small town.
The game starts with a gripping opening sequence where the player is introduced to the protagonist, a journalist who is investigating the disappearance of a scientist in the town of Hinton. As the player navigates through the town, they are met with eerie and ominous environments, adding to the suspense and tension of the game.
Contamination features a non-linear gameplay, allowing players to explore the town freely and interact with various characters to gather clues and information. The game also incorporates elements of survival horror, where players have to manage their resources carefully to progress in the game.
One of the most interesting aspects of Contamination is its use of puzzles to advance in the game. These puzzles are cleverly designed to fit the overall theme and add to the immersive experience. From decoding messages to finding hidden keys, players will need to use their wits and logic to overcome these challenges.
The graphics of Contamination, although limited by the capabilities of the Amstrad CPC, are well-designed and effectively convey the eerie atmosphere of the game. The use of sound effects also adds to the tension, creating a truly immersive experience for players.
The game's storyline is also well-crafted and intriguing, with unexpected plot twists and turns that will keep players engaged until the very end. As players progress through the game, they will uncover dark secrets and encounter dangers that will keep them on the edge of their seats.
Contamination was met with critical acclaim upon its release, with many praising its engaging gameplay, immersive atmosphere, and clever use of puzzles. It has since become a cult classic among Amstrad CPC enthusiasts and is still remembered fondly by many gamers.
Eden Blues
Eden Blues is an action/adventure game by ERE, a French developer known for making quirky titles. From MobyGames' description:
'In this real-time adventure you are a prison prisoner guarded by droids. And you know the list of their duty: some of them are on duty by day, others by night. You have to find your way out of the maze using your legs and your ability to hit the doors. Your health decreases over time, and you must find the bottles to recover. When you are hitting the door, your physical stamina decreases and you must find a food to recover it. In [the] game you will also find the coins for the coffee vending machines, but watch out for talking portraits and other traps...'.
The game is fun, but the adventure elements are not as well integrated as OCEAN's classic The Great Escape. Your health steadily declines (from languishing too long in jail, perhaps?) and adds to the sense of urgency throughout the game, but fortunately those bottles aren't that hard to find. Mapping is a must in this game, otherwise you might find yourself back where you were before, with no more bottles to collect. The only thing in the game that can be called 'puzzle' is the need to observe the movement patterns of the droids.
Even with the interesting new objects you'll find every few screens, Eden Blues just isn't as fun or original as the other ERE classics. Play The Great Escape instead if you want a jailbreak action game.
Phalsberg
As a game developed by Presto Studios and published by software company Accolade, Phalsberg was released in 1988 and quickly gained a dedicated following among DOS gamers. This text-based adventure game stands out for its unique blend of fantasy elements, strategic gameplay and captivating storyline - all set in the mystical world of Phalsberg.
The game’s plot revolves around the player taking on the role of a novice adventurer who must explore the fantasy world of Phalsberg to find and defeat the evil wizard, Zenzabrax. The journey through Phalsberg is not an easy one - players must navigate through various landscapes including forests, mountains, caves and even the underground lair of Zenzabrax himself. With each step, players must make strategic decisions on which paths to pursue and which enemies to engage in battle.
One of the most distinctive features of Phalsberg is its text-based gameplay. Unlike most games of its time, Phalsberg relies on text descriptions rather than graphics to paint a picture of this mythical world. This unique style of gameplay adds a layer of complexity and challenge, as players must use their imagination to visualize the scenes and characters in the game.
To aid in the exploration of Phalsberg, players also have access to a variety of spells, magical items and weapons. These can be found throughout the game, and players must use them wisely to defeat enemies and overcome obstacles. Additionally, players must manage their health and magic levels as these deplete with each battle and must be replenished through items or magical spells.
Aside from the challenging gameplay, Phalsberg also offers an intricate storyline. As players progress through the game, they uncover pieces of the plot by interacting with non-player characters and acquiring artifacts that reveal the secrets of Phalsberg. The more players uncover, the more immersed they become in the story - making for a truly engaging gaming experience.
