Darwin's Dilemma

Darwin's Dilemma is a classic Mac game released in 1990 that has stood the test of time and remains a favorite among fans of strategy and adventure games. Developed by Claris, a subsidiary of Apple, the game is set in the mid-19th century and follows the story of Charles Darwin as he embarks on his famous voyage on the HMS Beagle. Players take on the role of Darwin and must navigate through the challenges of the voyage, while also unraveling the mysteries of the Galapagos Islands and the discoveries that ultimately led to his theory of evolution. The game is a unique blend of strategy, adventure, and educational elements, making it both entertaining and informative. The graphics, although simple by today's standards, were groundbreaking for their time and add to the overall immersive experience of the game. The soundtrack also adds to the atmosphere of the game, with catchy tunes that transport players to the world of Darwin's voyage. One of the most notable features of Darwin's Dilemma is the attention to detail in recreating the historical setting of the game. The game includes a library of real-life documents, such as journal entries and sketches from Darwin's voyage, giving players a glimpse into the life and work of one of the most influential scientists in history. This adds an educational aspect to the game, making it not only entertaining but also a learning experience. The gameplay of Darwin's Dilemma is challenging yet rewarding. Players must manage resources, make strategic decisions, and interact with characters on the ship to progress in the game. The discovery of new species and the ability to document them in Darwin's journal adds a sense of accomplishment and realism to the game. Additionally, unexpected events and obstacles along the voyage keep players on their toes and add to the excitement of the game. One of the unique aspects of Darwin's Dilemma is its emphasis on the importance of conservation and the impact of human actions on the environment. This message is conveyed through the game's storyline and the choices players must make, which adds an ethical dimension to the gameplay. This added layer of complexity sets Darwin's Dilemma apart from other games of its time and highlights the forward-thinking nature of the game's developers.

Mutant Beach

Mac 1991
Mutant Beach takes place on a small tropical island. Someone has stolen the nose of the Great Mohawk Idol. This, of course, makes the Great Idol very angry and he unleashes the twelve idols of Idol City, who turn the island upside down and mutate its inhabitants into strange creatures. Only one of the islanders is lucky, the native Nick, who is fishing when he finds a note in a bottle informing him of what has happened. Nick is now the only one who can save the village. To do so he has to retrieve the Nose and return it to Mohawk. Mutant Beach is more like an adventure game although with some action elements. The player takes control of the native Nick and moves around the island with keyboard or mouse controls. To get help in retrieving the nose, the player has to talk to the idols and ask them what they want in return for their help. These can be gifts or magic spells. Most of the game consists of searching for and collecting these objects. Sometimes a magic spell is needed to retrieve the items. The mutants are not all very friendly and can be dangerous or require magic to overcome. The player also has to watch out for mutant islanders who try to steal items from the player's inventory. When they attack, the player can protect himself by hitting them and they will be stunned for a while. The game has a time limit. The player has to complete it in 30, 60 or 90 minutes, depending on his choice. If he fails, Mohawk will turn him into a rock.
