Grapple

Apple II 1982
Released in 1982, Grapple was one of the first games developed for the Apple II computer. Developed by Quantum Quality Productions, this game was a unique blend of puzzle-solving and platforming elements, creating a challenging and engaging experience for players. Grapple follows the story of a brave adventurer who must navigate through treacherous levels filled with obstacles and enemies. The goal of the game is to guide the protagonist to the end of each level, collecting all the treasures in the process. However, the twist that sets Grapple apart from other platformers is the use of a grappling hook as the primary means of movement. Players must master the art of using the grappling hook to swing from platform to platform, avoiding hazards and strategically taking down enemies. The controls were simple yet intuitive, making the game accessible to players of all ages. One of the most notable aspects of Grapple was its stunning graphics for its time. The game boasted vibrant colors and detailed level design, creating a visually appealing world for players to explore. The soundtrack also added to the immersive experience, with its catchy tunes and sound effects that matched the actions on screen. Grapple offered a variety of challenging levels that required players to think creatively and plan their moves carefully. As the game progresses, the levels become increasingly difficult, testing the player's skills to their limits. The game also featured several bosses that required quick reflexes and precise grappling hook movements to defeat. Apart from the main gameplay, Grapple also had a level editor, allowing players to create and share their own custom levels. This feature added a whole new level of replayability to the game, keeping players engaged long after they had completed the main campaign. Grapple was a commercial success, receiving high praise from critics and players alike. Its unique gameplay, challenging levels, and polished graphics made it stand out in a sea of other games at the time. It also served as a precursor to games like Bionic Commando and Spider-Man, which incorporated similar grappling hook mechanics.

Zargs

Apple II 1982
Zargs is a 1-player arcade game for the Apple II. Intelligence has learned of the approach of several thousand mysterious glowing objects from the Crab Nebula region. It has been concluded that Earth will soon be attacked by alien spacecraft. The only hope is to complete and arm the top-secret Zarg spacecraft, military weaponized super-ships built just inside the orbit of the great asteroid belt. As captain of each interstellar battleship, you must work against the clock to precisely pilot, turn and dock your ship at one of four Zarg ports before transporting back to Earth, where you will captain another ship. The game consists of 4 levels. In the first level, the player must navigate between asteroids, balloons and spaceships to maneuver his ship out of the top center of the screen. The player can move left, right, up and down. If the player hits an object, a ship is lost, and the player starts with a total of 5 ships. From there, the player has reached outer space and the second level. The player must navigate horizontally across the screen, as numerous pieces of debris cross the player's path in a vertical direction. The player is armed with a laser at this stage, and can shoot at the debris in his path. The player must exit through a small hole on the right side of the screen. In the third level, the player must align his ship with the superstructure of the Zarg ship. He has a limited time to do so or his ship will be destroyed. The player must repeat the first 3 levels 4 times, to dock in all 4 pots of the Zarg ship. If the player's ship is destroyed in levels 1 - 3, it restarts at level 1. After completing levels 1 - 3 four times, the player advances to the fourth stage, where the Zarg is activated, and the alien invasion begins. The player can shoot in the 4 cardinal directions while remaining stationary in the center of the screen. The player must quickly destroy the incoming ships before the alien fire destroys the Zarg.
