ICON: Quest for The Ring
ICON: Quest for The Ring and Seven Spirits of Ra are two very revolutionary real-time RPGs that are unfortunately overlooked by most gamers. The reasons why they deserve a prominent place in RPG history are explained in great detail in MobyGames' article on Macrocom, the company behind these games:
An interesting little niche in PC gaming history is occupied by products like ICON: Quest for The Ring and Seven Spirits of Ra, both developed by a small company called Macrocom. These two products are unconventional and not only pushed the early IBM PC to its technical limits, but also broke new ground in terms of game ideas and execution.
It would be hard to find a more unique game than ICON in the 1980s, for example: Based on Wagner's opera Reingold (!), it featured 16-color graphics on a video card that was only capable of reproducing 4 colors in graphics mode. The game was real-time, and was calculated and animated at 60 frames per second. And this was in 1984. His later project, 1987's Seven Spirits of Ra, was even more ambitious, tackling the myth of the resurrection of Osiris from ancient Egyptian mythology.
If you're looking for truly revolutionary games that broke the mold, look no further than these two overlooked ones. In addition, designers Neal White III and Rand Bohrer have made ICON free after the MobyGames interview, an act of generosity for fans of ancient RPGs.
