Space Clusters
Space Clusters is a classic science fiction action adventure game, developed and published by Apple Computer for the Apple IIGS computer system in 1990. Taking control of a test pilot in an experimental spacecraft, players must traverse the expanse of the galaxies, while avoiding enemy forces and utilizing weapons to destroy their adversaries.
The game was released right at the dawn of the age of 16-bit gaming, and as such, was quite ground breaking for its time. Space Clusters boasted the unique ability to allow players to freely move the craft in free-flight mode, an innovation that was well ahead of its time. Within its impressive 3-D environment, players had the ability to zoom in and out, while controlling their spacecraft's lateral movement as well.
To add an additional layer of complexity to the game, Space Clusters features two distinct modes of play: The Strategic Mode, and The Combat Mode. Within Strategic Mode, players need to complete stealth objectives to bypass enemy forces. In the Combat mode, they must engage their enemies in fierce battles, utilizing an array of tools such as missiles, bombs, and energy blasts. The game requires players to constantly switch between modes, while making use of quick reflexes to outsmart their enemies.
An exciting feature of Space Clusters was the presence of a two-player cooperative mode. With this mode, two players could work together, each controlling one of two ships to traverse and battle through the game's galaxies. Either player could then take the center seat, controlling the ship in the middle.
Space Clusters also included an editor allowing players to design their own custom levels and graphics. This allowed players to create new galaxies and ships, as well as experience enhanced battles with their friends.
As a game for the Apple IIGS, Space Clusters definitely set the bar for science fiction games during its time. It presented an array of innovative gaming features that provided an intense and unique experience. The two player cooperative mode and level editor gave the game an level of depth and replay value that was sure to captivate and engage players.
