Pea Shootin' Pete

DOS 1994
Pea Shootin' Pete is a fun shareware arcade game that looks deceptively simple, but will win you over after repeated play. The concept is simple: armed with a small blowgun, you have to shoot (or blow, to be more precise) peas vertically at the colored balloons that bounce around the screen in each level. When you pop them, the balloon will split into two smaller ones, so you have to pop them until they are small enough to disappear. You will pass to the next level when you have popped all the balloons. The game is not as simple as it seems. For starters, you have to avoid getting hit by the balloons, and the smaller ones are hard to avoid, as you must first stand still before shooting the pea. Fortunately, there are plenty of power-ups that randomly drop from popped balloons, including an item that slows down all balloons, freezes them, or gives you extra lives. The graphics aren't spectacular, but it's the addictive gameplay that will keep you glued to the screen for hours on end. Don't be fooled by the simple premise of the game -- Pea Shootin' Pete has all the charm of the coin-op games that sucked countless coins when you were growing up.
