It Came from the Desert
It Came from the Desert is a remake of the original 1989 Amiga game of the same name, but with a large number of changes and improvements. The basic setting has been kept identical. It is a mixture of action and adventure elements, largely inspired by the cult B-movies of the 1950s and 1960s, and in particular the 1954 film Them. The player plays Dr. Greg Bradley, a geologist and the city's newest resident. Eager to satisfy his scientific mind, Bradley sets out to examine the crash site of a mysterious meteorite, but what he finds is not at all what he was looking for.
The game was commissioned by NEC for the TurboGrafx CD console to showcase the capabilities of the new CD-ROM format. With a team that included many developers from the original game, the graphical and drawn sequences from the original game were converted into full motion video. These were performed by real actors, filmed and then imported into the game, also fully voiced. These recorded actors were imposed on still photos of real locations. Player input primarily determines the next sequence to be triggered or the next location to travel to, and the conversation trees from the original game were not reused.
The live sequences are mixed with drawn side-scrolling sequences in which the player fights ants in tunnels, along with top-down drawn action sequences that were also used in the original version. There are also some events where the player has to aim with a crosshair to eliminate other characters.
