Sword Quest 1: The Search
Sword Quest 1: The Search is a single-player, keyboard-controlled fantasy role-playing game.
The player's role is that of court jester to the King of Ferd. An evil sorcerer has unleashed a horde of nasty creatures upon the land - dragons, griffins, goblins, etc. The problem is that you start your quest without weapons and armor, so it is best to avoid combat until you are better equipped. Armor and weapons can be found in caves, etc. , or purchased in towns. or buy them in the cities.
The game starts by creating a character, the game will assign skill points to the three categories of strength, skill and dexterity. The player can roll the dice again until he finds a combination he is satisfied with, at which point he names his character and the game begins.
The entire game is played on a single screen. At the top right is a window showing the character in the landscape, below it and of equal size is the NGS logo. At the top left is the rectangular dialog box in which conversations take place and other game information is displayed. In the middle left are two smaller windows, one showing basic keyboard commands and the other character statistics. At the bottom left is the fight window, which initially shows the game title, but when the player starts moving it shows the enemy he just encountered.
This means that the player moves his character around the landscape, but has to look at the fight window to see if he has run into anything unpleasant and the dialogue window to see how many hit points he receives from an opponent (or loses to said opponent).
There are some basic sound effects in the game, but no autosave.
Sword Quest 2: Tale of the Talisman
Sword Quest 2: Tale of the Talisman is a single-player, keyboard-controlled fantasy role-playing game, and is the sequel to Sword Quest 1: The Search.
The player's role is still that of court jester in the court of the King of Ferd, however, after the adventures of the first game you have been promoted to a knight. All is well, all is good until you are summoned to another world by 'The Sorcerers of Zrofdomel'. It seems that an evil one known as 'The Dragon Lord' has invaded Golbe, your world, has imprisoned your army and unleashed a horde of nasty creatures upon the land, dragons, vampire bats, slimes, etc. The wizards are too weak to fight, so they have summoned you to free their world by slaying the Dragon Lord and claiming his talisman, all of which you must do before they send you home.
The wizards send you off with food and money, but more importantly, you have no armor or weapons, so again, it's best to avoid combat until you're better equipped and at least have money to buy them if you make it to a city unharmed. The game starts by creating a character, the game will assign skill points to the three categories of strength, skill and dexterity and then gives the player thirty points to assign to these skills as they wish.
The entire game takes place on a single screen. At the top left is a window showing the character in the landscape, below it are two smaller windows: one shows the basic keyboard commands and the other shows the character's statistics. At the top right is the fight window, which shows the current enemy and, when not fighting, the game title. Below this, in the middle right, is the dialog box and below this are small windows showing the current weapon, armor, shield and 'other items' being carried.
As in the previous game, this means that the player moves his character around the landscape in a window, but has to look at the fight window to see if he has run into anything unpleasant and the dialog window to see how many hit points he receives from an opponent (or loses to said opponent). There are some sound effects in the game and when the player dies he is revived by the mages back to the beginning of the game, but some or all of his items are lost in the process.
