Canton: An Atlas Pathfinder Adventure
Canton is a shareware historical trade simulation game, set in 18th century China. Taking the role of Atlas Pathfinder, a young adventurer and entrepreneur, the player must explore sea and land, trade with numerous Chinese cities, and eventually build a vast and successful trading empire.
The game begins in the city of Canton (Guangdong), with a single caravan and a small starting capital. The first objective is to locate another city in order to start trading. Available trade goods include grain, meat, salt, ore, weapons and tools, and each city has certain levels of demand and supply of goods, with different bid and ask prices. Thus, it is possible to buy goods cheaply in one city and sell them at a profit in another; in addition, food (grain and meat) is needed to cover the costs of maintaining a caravan, and part of the income also goes to pay for the caravan each turn.
Once a certain level of profit from trade is reached, the player can hire more caravans for trade and exploration, and also use some of the caravans to build warehouses. The warehouses not only serve to store goods (as each caravan has a maximum load capacity that cannot be exceeded), but also allow the player's trading company to produce its own goods. To do so, the player can hire or recruit peasants and craftsmen in the cities. A warehouse with at least four peasants will produce one unit of food (grain or meat) each turn, and four craftsmen in a warehouse produce one tool or weapon each turn.
In addition to trade and exploration, there are fairly frequent special events in the game that can be profitable or adverse to the player's assets. For example, an exploration caravan may find hidden treasure that will add money to the company's budget. On the other hand, pirates may attack ships at sea, and repelling a successful attack can only be achieved if the player has provided protection to caravans and ships in the form of hired soldiers.
The registered version of the game allows you to play for decades in the game, simulating Atlas Pathfinder's long career as a manager and entrepreneur. The shareware version, on the other hand, only offers five years of play time, or sixty turns (each turn counts as one month). In addition, some of the game's features and options, such as the establishment of fixed trade routes, are disabled in the shareware version of Canton.
