Twork
Twork is a side-scrolling action platformer with a setting that combines science fiction and fantasy elements. The protagonist is a young wizard who is one of the last of his kind. Once upon a time, there were many wizards in the planetary system where Twork lives, but an apprentice wizard became paranoid, killed his master and tried to conquer the universe with an army of monsters. However, the other wizards united to capture the rebellious Red Wizard and banished him and his followers to a distant unexplored planet.
Many years later, the Red Mage found a way to escape his imprisonment, and by then there were no mages left to stop him (for reasons not detailed in the story), so he took control of the entire system. Only Tiwerk can stop this villain and his minions.
The game features all the typical elements of the genre. These include running, jumping, climbing over ledges and vines, collecting useful items, avoiding hazards and fighting monsters. In addition, characters can crouch and crawl, which may be necessary to overcome certain obstacles or reach secret areas. Twork can shoot magic bullets with a wand. The wand has a standard rapid-fire mode and a more powerful alternate-fire mode that requires recharging and consumes more energy.
The game was sold as shareware and was therefore divided into several episodes with different themes and monsters, each representing a planet in the star system. Each episode ended with a boss battle against the Red Wizard's crew, and the final episode ended with the Red Wizard as the final boss of the game. Only one planet was available in the shareware version. The number of planned episodes varied from 10 in the first beta version to 4 in later versions.
Twork uses mostly good quality prerendered sprites and generally tries to avoid bright, cartoonish colors for a more realistic visual presentation; it uses VESA mode for smooth scrolling, which contributes to fast and fluid gameplay.
