Tetris

Tetris is a tile-matching puzzle video game originally designed and programmed by Alexey Pajitnov in the Soviet Union. It was released on June 6, 1984, while he was working for the Dorodnicyn Computing Centre of the Academy of Science of the USSR in Moscow. He derived its name from the Greek numerical prefix tetra- (all of the game's pieces, known as Tetriminos, contain four segments) and tennis, his favorite sport. Pajitnov was the first person to create and release a video game that he did not own the rights to. He was later forced to sell the rights to Tetris to the Soviet government for a mere $1,000, as he was employed by the state-run Dorodnicyn Computing Centre at the time of its creation. The game was popularized in the West when it was bundled with the Nintendo Game Boy in 1989, and has since been released on nearly every video game platform. Tetris has been described as "addictive" by many critics. Although the original game is in black and white, it was later adapted into a color version for the Game Boy. It has also had a number of sequels and spin-offs, including The New Tetris for the Nintendo 64. The objective of Tetris is to score as many points as possible by clearing horizontal lines of Blocks. The player must rotate, move, and drop the falling Tetriminos inside the Matrix (playing field). Lines are cleared when they are filled with Blocks and have no empty spaces. As lines are cleared, the Blocks placed on top of them collapse and the empty space is filled. The player receives points for each line that is cleared. If the player clears multiple lines at once, they receive a higher score. The game ends when the player loses, which occurs when the Stack (the next piece that will enter the Matrix) reaches the top of the Matrix.
