Rick Hanson

Rick Hanson, released for the Atari 8-bit in 1986, was a platform-based game developed by Accolade, Inc. and distributed by Atari. Players took control of Rick, a native Australian who had to traverse fourteen levels of unique and varied terrain and enemies in order to save his family from the evil witch doctor. The goal of the game was to reach the family's camp on the other side of the level. This was achieved by collecting thunderstones, which could be used to clear areas of enemies or destructible objects. Additionally, the player could control a water balloon by using the joystick and fire button. The balloon would release a shockwave on contact with an enemy and destroy it. The levels were of moderate difficulty, giving experienced players the opportunity to hone their skills while newcomers could get accustomed to the game mechanics. A total of twelve different enemy types formed a barrier on the way to the end of the level. These enemies had different properties and responded to attacks and movements differently. Rick Hanson offered a unique blend of platforming and puzzles. The level design progressively became more complex, with varying terrain and obstacles that had to be navigated to proceed. In an effort to further challenge the player, each level was filled with gems, hidden under ledges or in walls, which, when collected, would increase the player's score. Graphically, Rick Hanson featured colorful sprites in monochrome graphics. Though not revolutionary, the visuals still offered interesting and varied backgrounds. Furthermore, the game ran smoothly, allowing for minimal lag due to fast-paced levels. A soundtrack pre-recorded in chip-tune format accompanied the action, nicely adjusting to the pace of the current situation. Rick Hanson is an engaging game that allows for continuous replay and the discovery of new secrets every time. Those looking for an entertaining game to play may find this title an enjoyable and replayable session.
