MDK

DOS 1997
MDK was a revolutionary DOS action-strategy game released in 1997 that brought the platform genre into a new era. Surprisingly, the game's unique combination of action, exploration, and puzzle-solving elements were achieved in large part by a two-man team: David Perry and Andrew Manson. At the outset of MDK, players take control of the metallic superhero, Kurt Hectic. Armed with a specially designed suit and a strange assortment of weapons, Kurt must save Earth from an alien invasion led by Doctor Fluke Hawkins. To do this, Kurt has to traverse eight hazardous levels and take out multiple bosses. The levels are cleverly designed, leaving plenty of room for exploration and experimentation. MDK is more than just a run-and-gun shooter. Rather, it incorporates some light puzzle elements and optional objectives. For example, many levels contain hidden areas that require quick thinking or special items to access. When the going gets tough, players can exploit the sniping and stealth capabilities of the hero suit as a way to survive. MDK's weapons are also an important part of its success. Named the six-pack, these weapons range from a simple pistol to thrown bombs and rocket launchers. Of particular note is the Coil Suit, a set of boosters that allow Kurt to execute impressive aerial stunts, including powerful U-turns, corkscrews, and actual loops in the air. Graphics are surprisingly well done for its time, incorporating a wide range of MIDI music and sound effects, as well as 16-bit color palette. The soundtracks have remained iconic, to this day. All in all, MDK was arguably ahead of its time and remains a classic to this day.
