Survival
Released in 1983, Survival was an Atari 8-bit video game that gave players a unique challenge - to survive for as long as they could. The game was published by Astrovision and programmed by Tom Banghart.
The goal of Survival is quite simple - survive as long as possible by avoiding enemies. Players start off with a single life without any weapons, and they must keep clear of the hostile creatures that populate the terrain to stay alive. The creatures vary in strength; some are slow and harmless, while others are faster and more dangerous. Players must figure out when and how to avoid these monsters in order to survive.
The terrain the player must traverse is a grid-like landscape with multiple levels. The landscape is populated with obstacles such as rocks, trees, and water. In order to progress and find rewards, players must maneuver around these obstacles while still avoiding enemies. This makes for a tricky but interesting game experience.
Players are also in search of weapons, which can be used to expedite their progress and save them from enemies. Weapons come in the form of gun and missile pods, that can be collected while navigating the terrain. These weapons help the player eliminate foes and open paths to new levels.
In addition to the single player mode, Survival offered an exciting two-player mode. Both players can appear on the same screen, compete against each other and fight off enemies. This mode added an extra layer of competition and made the game even more thrilling.
The challenge and excitement of Survival was quite well-received at the time of its release, and it continues to be appreciated by many Atari 8-bit fans today. It was an excellent game for a quick session of survival-based fun.
