Created by epic Games, RAD is a 1992 DOS game that is not as heralded as some of the dominant game titles from the same era. It first released for DOS as a quick international title in June 1992 and is a turn-based strategy sci-fi themed game.
The game begins in the far future where an alien race has succeeded in taking control of the three planets that humanity relied on for survival in the last great intergalactic war. Players must take the role of the general of the United Army in two scenarios across the game's three levels.
This is accomplished by scouting for enemy units, gathering resources, and constructing various defensive and offensive structures, all while managing the maintenance costs of currency. As the game progresses, several new and advanced units become available, allowing players to capitalize on their improved tactical abilities.
Once all of the enemy units in a mission have been destroyed, players are rewarded with coins to use later in the game. The money can be used to purchase additional units and upgrade those already in the player's arsenal. Additionally, each map offers secret areas in which resources or bonus items can be collected.
RAD features hybrid top-down and side-view perspectives to accurately depict the battle arena. These perspectives change depending on the shift in perspective from the global map to the real-time battlefield. It also showcases support for a variety of multiplayer options, including up to four player simultaneous play.
An integral part of the game is its sound design, with intense and dynamic music being composed to fit the scenes of battle. In addition, sound effects, alarms, and soundbites provide further immersion in the game.
The legacy of RAD lives on, as its genre-blending strategy title still stands the test of time. Despite not receiving the fanfare of similar genre-busting titles, it continues to live on through dedicated fans who wish to experience its compelling story and unique features.
