Rocket Racer is a game in which the player controls a rocket to complete 15 missions, which are checkpoint races. The rocket moves under its own power, and the player uses the mouse to change altitude and the keyboard keys to move it left or right. It is also possible to accelerate and decelerate, but the rocket always stays within a certain speed range. There are a total of 10 different doors to pass through along the way, including a teleport door that teleports the rocket to another location, a standard door that provides a time bonus, and an arcade door that opens and closes. Some of the doors require keys, and the objective of the mission is to find the exit door.

Along the way, it is also necessary to avoid hitting an asteroid. When the rocket hits an asteroid or a door, it loses a life, and when it reaches zero, it loses a life. The same happens when time runs out. There are also six power-ups that give a health bonus, extra lives, a weapon to ward off asteroids, a turbo boost or a protective shield.
