Rocket Repairman was an enormously popular 8-bit game released by Atari in 1986. This unique title was designed for individual players as well as two simultaneous players, fostering intense competition and teamwork.
Set among the planets and asteroids of outer space, the premise of Rocket Repairman was to maneuver a spaceship around hazardous obstacles while quickly repairing various craft before landing. Players begin each 'shift' fully stocked and equipped with repair tools, but must restock periodically as they progress. As time passes, the game intensifies.
The aim of the game is to fix fourteen ships in fifty-minutes, which must be done in order to win. If players fail to finish their repairs or if time runs out, the game is lost. With twelve levels of difficulty and two alternative play modes, Rocket Repairman proved to be a challenging experience.
The graphics were crisp, colorful, and advanced, allowing for almost total immersion into the trippy digital environment. Enumerating its visual effects would require a paragraph offer its own. Moreover, the accompanying soundtrack was widely praised for its compelling, retro-aesthetic.
The biggest draw of Rocket Repairman's appeal is undeniable: it has been the go-to title for many seasoned and casual gamers. Still, some limit their enjoyment by only playing the beginning levels—a mistake, since mastering the tougher challenges was designed to require a high degree of skill. That being said, any fan of 8-bit gaming is advised to give Rocket Repairman a try.
