Sabotage was an interesting yet challenging game released on the Atari 8-bit console back in 1982. Developed by Artworx Software, the game allowed players to take on the role of a spy, overtaking a power plant and engaging in some espionage as you moved from floor to floor, completing the various objectives and returning to your helicopter before time ran out.
The game was split into 20 levels, each followed by an end-of-level bonus screen. The main goal of each level was to reach the computer that fueled the plant's nuclear reactor before midnight and turn it off. If you failed, your mission was a bust and the level would start again. Other objectives that needed to be completed before the level was considered successful include finding evidence of sabotage, locating secret files and eliminating values.
The graphical and audio elements of Sabotage were certainly remarkable for the time, given the available hardware and software development technology. You were shown the power plant from a top-down perspective, and a defined musical score played during the game itself. In order to make progress and remain one step ahead of the security guards, it was also necessary to collect various objects that would often require a combination of skill and luck to obtain.
Having to complete cleared objectives before the clock hit midnight added an extra layer of excitement to the game and often led to some nailbiting moments as the player continued to push further within the game. There is no doubt that the controls added extra difficulty, as they often felt quite penny and any mistake could lead to failure.
Sabotage was an innovative game for the Atari 8-bit that provided an immersive experience that captivated its players. It allowed players to get a sense of what espionage was like and with a tight focus on completing objectives, Sabotage remains a classic in the puzzle-adventure game genre.
