Shattered Steel

Shattered Steel is a video game in the action genre developed by BioWare Corporation and published by Interplay Productions, Inc. originally released in 1996. It is currently playable on DOS.

Shattered Steel is a 3D first-person action game similar in concept to the MechWarrior series. The player takes control of bipedal machines (mechs) known as Planet Runners, who attempt to protect humanity from the alien threat. The single-player campaign takes place on five different planets, with about twenty missions available for each. The missions consist mostly of direct assaults, infiltration of enemy strongholds, defense of home bases or escorting important characters.

The player can pilot up to seven different Runners of different sizes and shapes, which have their own strengths and weaknesses. Each Runner is equipped with primary and secondary weapons that are charged with energy or require bullets. Enemies are mostly in the form of animals and can be eliminated using the game's localized damage system: for example, it is possible to incapacitate (but not kill) enemies by destroying their legs. The game also features deformable terrain, which can be used to the player's advantage in some cases. Also included is a mission editor, an 'anarchy' mode with cooperative options and a multiplayer mode for up to sixteen players.
