SimLife is a life simulation video game developed by Will Wright and published by Maxis in 1992. The game is set on an archipelago of six islands, each with its own climate and ecology. Players can control the evolution of the island's flora and fauna by manipulating the environment, such as changing the temperature or the amount of rainfall.
The game was one of the first to use genetic algorithms, which Wright had developed while working on the game. Wright was inspired to create SimLife after reading about the work of James D. Watson, the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA.
SimLife was well-received upon release, with critics praising its innovative gameplay and graphics. However, some reviewers found the game to be too complex and difficult to understand.
SimLife is considered to be one of the earliest examples of a life simulation game. It was followed by several sequels, including SimLife 2 (1995) and SimLife 3D (1998).
