Description Snoopy

The gathering of nostalgia amongst Commodore 64 users all starts with a game that creates fond memories amongst gamers. Snoopy by Commodore, released in 1984, may not have been the best game released for the 8-bit platform but it does bring along memories of hours spent solving puzzles and gathering apples to feed Snoopy’s puppies.

In Snoopy, you take control of the beagle and must help him fetch apples to feed his litter of puppies. To do this, you will traverse a two dimensional world filled with enemies, ladders and blocks. Your goal is to collect all the apples in each level and make it to the exit. With a limited number of lives and no scrolling or save feature, the game proves to be quite challenging.

The primary adversaries you will encounter are cats, dogs and birds. Bombs can also be deployed to break blocks and open the way for Snoopy to find access to previously unreachable areas. Various power-ups, such as pizza and ice cream, are scattered throughout the levels and offer the player temporary invincibility against enemies. An interesting feature of the game is that when you are brought down to a single life, Snoopy dons an aviator cap akin to his owner, Charlie Brown.

Visually, Snoopy is a mix of charm and exquisite colours. The character sprites have vivid shades and good animations, while the environments also make use of vibrant in-game elements. The only downside is that the levels feel mundane, as they all look the same and enemy placement is the same from level to level as well. The audio consists primarily of simplistic chiptunes which won’t be winning any awards, but they do, to some extent, compliment the overall experience.

Snoopy for the Commodore 64 proved to be an entertaining, albeit simplistic, title which brought back vivid memories of playing the game for hours on end. Even though it may not be the most graphically or technically advanced title for the 8-bit platform, it does offer an intriguing experience and an endearing style of gameplay all its own, helping the beagle in collecting apples to feed his litter of puppies.
