Soldier One

Soldier One is a video game in the action genre developed by Greve Graphics and published by American Action AB originally released in 1985. It is currently playable on Commodore 64.

You are a one man army and you have been tasked with sailing to an island, taking the island before finally taking a fortress that contains a mad general who has invaded the island with his army and is now planning more invasions. The game takes place in seven stages and you must complete each stage to get closer to your goal. You have an energy bar and at any stage you are shot or bombed you lose part of it and when it is empty it is game over. You also have to be careful with your ammo, as it decreases every time you shoot. Your power bar and ammo stays the same throughout the seven stages and you can't get more. The game is set to a clock and your high score is based on your time at the end of the game. The stages are played with a joystick and are as follows.

Battle at sea (stage 1): You are sailing on the ocean and the enemy has sent boats to stop you. The stage is viewed from above on one screen and you fire a cannon at the front of the boat while enemy boats pass vertically upward. You must destroy five as they fire at you to move to the next stage.

Behind the cannon (stage 2), approaching the island (stage 3): The view changes to a 1st person perspective with the island in view on one screen as you fire a cannon at three ships in stage 2 and three cannons and a ship in stage 3. You can move the cannon left or right and pressing up or down with the joystick increases or decreases the duration of your shots. The enemy will shoot bombs at you, some missing and some hitting.

Entering the island (phase 4): Seen from above with the scenery seen on one screen you can see your ship and a landing craft on the left of the screen. To the right is the island with two gun emplacements above and below on the beach. You must move your ship towards the center of the beach while avoiding the bombs fired from the two guns.

Fight them on the beach (Stage 5), watch out for ambushes (Stage 6): Now that you are on the island you must overcome two stages to reach the fortress. Seen from a 1st person perspective with the stages on a single screen you must shoot any soldier that appears and after shooting a certain amount you pass to the next stage. As in stages 2 and 3, you can move your rifle left and right and move it up or down to change the length of your bullets.

Fortress Attack (stage 7): The final stage and you have reached the General's fortress. The stage plays out exactly the same as stages 5 and 6 and once you have shot a set amount of soldiers, they surrender and you have won. The game ends and you can see your final time before playing the game again. In each stage, in addition to the main game area, you can see the ammo, power, stage time and your total time.
