Space Academy

Space Academy is a video game in the action genre and published by Encore originally released in 1989. It is currently playable on Commodore 64.

As a recruit of the Space Academy, you must complete numerous tasks, most of which test your dexterity and sometimes require you to press a button. The tasks are divided into physical training and weapons training. Before starting the weapon training, you must complete the physical training.

The physical training starts with running: move the joystick as fast as possible to make the recruit run. After that, you have to balance on a rope: A bar at the bottom of the screen goes to the left or to the right, press the joystick in the opposite direction to prevent the recruit from falling off the rope. The next discipline, the obstacle course, works similarly to the race, except that you also have to jump over obstacles. After the obstacle course, the recruit must again balance on a rope, but this time he also has to avoid the obstacles by crouching or jumping. In the next discipline, the recruit has to hold on to a small device that runs along a rope, lifting his legs at the right moment to avoid hitting the obstacles. He then has to jump at the right moment to touch moving targets with his hands, while the grid he is leaning on is moving away. The penultimate discipline requires him to crawl through a narrow tunnel, dodging obstacles and avoiding laser beams. While the recruit crawls forward automatically, you can only push down to dodge obstacles and keep him still. But don't take too long, as he constantly loses stamina. For the last test, the recruit must walk upright on a grid. Move the joystick until the energy bar turns red, then press fire to reach the next bar.

Once the physical training is completed, you can begin weapons training. Here you have to complete various courses while dodging or shooting various obstacles. Sometimes the recruit moves automatically and you can only jump or shoot. Sometimes the recruit can fly and you have full control over him. Although it is usually enough to reach the end of a course, sometimes you have to destroy a certain number of targets.
