Description Space Shuttle: Module One
Space Shuttle: Module One, released in 1982 by Atari, was an innovative 8-bit computer game that offered players the unprecedented opportunity to simulate the functions of an actual space shuttle’s mission control center. This first-rate gaming experience was divided into three modules: the first two involved controlling the maneuvers of the satellite, while the third module provided additional detailed challenge for players.
The first module in Space Shuttle: Module One tasked players with arriving at the correct orbital position to meet the soon-to-be-launched space craft. To do so, they had to manually enter commands to calculate the shuttle's course and time data, as well as utilize visual and voice capability to ensure the success of the mission. On top of this, the module also tested players’ problem-solving skills due to its continuous adaptation and programming options.
The next step was the second module, which involved controlling the satellite. Here, players had to input commands for launch and navigation as well as operate complex systems such as navigation, engine and reaction control systems from the mission control center. This second step included video playback, specialized audio, and photo display functions, and also featured simulated conditions such as friction and drag that had to be taken into account.
The third and final module involved mission management from the control center, which made the gaming experience even more realistic. Here, users could customize their simulated experience and plan ahead for unexpected events, necessitating careful management of fuel, time, oxygen, and more. Overall, each module became increasingly harder and required imaginative solutions to all the problems that could arise while completing the mission.
Space Shuttle: Module One was a revolutionary 8-bit game that allowed players to experience the thrill of space travel in a realistic manner. Through its innovative modules, this game provided an incredibly detailed simulation that tested players’ problem-solving capabilities and creativity. Although the game’s technology has since been surpassed by more sophisticated games, it stands as an important reminder of one of the milestone simulations of its time.
