Description Speedello
In 1980, Atari showcased their latest arcade-style game: Speedello. It was the first release by Atari that offered a competitive training facility for players, known as a Shooter Academy. The game combined action and puzzle elements to produce a highly addictive arcade experience.
Speedello began with a fast-paced training regimen consisting of various shooting exercises. The goal of these challenges was to hone your aim and reflexive shooting. To achieve a higher score, you needed to sweep out all the targets as quickly as possible. Players were able to track their performance with a scoreboard and leaderboard.
The core gameplay of Speedello involved defending your home base from enemy units. Enemies spawned in waves, with each wave progressively increasing in difficulty. Players were given a certain amount of time to annihilate the threat. To do so, they would have to dodge and shoot down incoming enemies before they got too close.
Players would shoot for points as well as power-ups to upgrade their weapons and ammunition. The difficulty could be adjusted depending on the player’s preference. A wide selection of weapons was also available, although some required special tokens to unlock.
Despite its legacy in the gaming world, Speedello never achieved immense fame and success. It was overshadowed by other titles released at the time. Nevertheless, the game was influential in pioneering the development of score-based shooter video games. Players searching for an exciting and challenging game should definitely give Speedello a try.
