Sprinter is a video game in the simulation genre developed by The Bytebusters and published by Eaglesoft originally released in 1986. It is currently playable on Commodore 64, MSX.
Sprinter was a popular video game developed for the MSX platform in 1986 by Katsuhiko Suzuki and M. Hotta. It was the first arcade-style sports game of its kind available for an MSX home computer. The aim of the game was to race in an endless runner-style format against a steadily escalating computer AI in a 40x17 pixel track.
The game's visual presentation was quite impressive for its time, with a variety of colourful and animated backgrounds and a clean and attractive 2D game board. Players could select from a variety of characters including a top-hatted human athlete, a mustached robot, a masked ninja, and a horse-headed alien. Each character had unique running and animation abilities. When playing, the characters would traverse the track, with the race timed and the beeping of the timer to announce the final winner.
The game also featured a variety of hurdles to overcome, such as cold wind, flames, flying stones, and other obstacles that players had to maneuver around. Additionally, the game could be played in either a single or two-player co-op mode, allowing players to encourage and help each other. Power-ups such as 'speed boosts' were also available to help level the playing field.
Though it may not have had the same level of graphics and controls that we're used to today, Sprinter provided an exciting and engaging experience for those who owned an MSX home computer in the mid-1980s. Additionally, the game would eventually be released in several other countries, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and France, highlighting its overall global appeal.
Sprinter's impact was great for the era, and it saw many re-releases and adaptations over the years. Despite its age, the game still holds a special place in the nostalgic hearts of gamers, thanks in part to its fun and zany characters, outrun-style platforming, and challenging but fair gameplay.
