Star Chess is a video game in the strategy genre developed by Dalton, Viewing & Whitsey Limited and published by Emerson Radio Corp. originally released in 1982. It is currently playable on Arcadia 2001.

Star Chess brings the classic game of chess to the Arcadia 2001 with a science-fiction presentation. The familiar battlefield is transformed into a field of stars, where opposing forces meet across an illuminated grid. Players command the traditional armies of king, queen, bishops, knights, rooks, and pawns, with the objective remaining the capture of the opposing king. The space setting supplies the atmosphere, while the rules and structure of the chess game provide a deliberate test of planning and judgment.

The joystick is used to move a marker across the board and select the desired piece. Once a piece has been chosen, the cursor is directed to its destination square, and the move is entered through the controller. Legal movement follows the established abilities of each chessman: pawns advance toward the opposing side, rooks travel along ranks and files, bishops move diagonally, knights leap into position, and the queen combines the long-range movement of rook and bishop. The king moves one square at a time and must be protected from attack. Captures are made by placing a piece on a square occupied by an opposing unit.

Star Chess is suited to two players, allowing friends or family members to face one another in a battle of tactics. Each side receives a distinct set of pieces, and the alternating turns encourage careful consideration before every command. Players must watch for checks, protect valuable pieces, and prepare attacks several moves in advance. The electronic format handles the board positions and captures while leaving the contest itself to the players. Its measured pace makes it a game of concentration rather than reflexes, with a strong move often depending on recognizing a threat before it becomes apparent.

The display uses simple, brightly colored arcade graphics designed for clear identification on a home television. Chessmen are represented by compact symbols or block-built figures, and the board is arranged for easy movement of the cursor from square to square. The dark, space-like background reinforces the title’s cosmic theme, making the playing area appear as a strategic station suspended among the stars. Visual effects are restrained, keeping attention on the position of every piece and the changing balance of the game.

Audio is used sparingly, with brief electronic tones accompanying selections, movement, or other changes on the board. These signals provide confirmation without interrupting the thoughtful tempo of play. Star Chess offers a quiet, focused experience in which the satisfaction comes from a successful combination, a well-timed capture, or the gradual closing of a winning attack.
