In Star Maze, the aim of the game is to progress as far as possible, eventually reaching the end of the level and obtaining a reward or bonus item. To do so, one must navigate their character, a space ship of sorts, through grid-like mazes without colliding into hazards. Movement within the maze is attained by controlling direction and speed with a joystick controller. As the player progresses, the difficulty increases, allowing for stronger opponents and faster levels.
Should obstacles be avoided, bonus items may be picked up. These bonus items, consisting of stars, hearts, and lightning bolts, provide bonus points and additional power-ups to aid in reaching the end of each maze. Initially, each level hosts enemies such as green aliens, but as game play evolves, more powerful foes are introduced; these include laser cannons, rotating fireballs, and spaceships. Fire power-ups may also occasionally be found that allow the player's ship to shoot at enemies.
The game was groundbreaking for its time as it features 3 distinct levels, each of which offer various challenges and dangers. An extra reward is issued each time all 10 levels are completed. Additionally, the game was notable due to its vibrant palette of colors that further accentuated the game play.
