Starcross

Starcross is a video game in the adventure genre developed by Infocom, Inc. and published by Infocom, Inc. originally released in 1984. It is currently playable on DOS, Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64, Mac.

The year is 2186. Humanity has established colonies on the Moon, Mars, and several of the larger asteroids. Earth's sky is dotted with space habitats, and the space lanes are always busy. As usual, there is an urgent need for energy to power this advanced civilization; one of the main sources of that energy is quantum black holes.

In Starcross, you're a black hole miner cruising the asteroid belt in your one-man survey ship. Finding and exploiting a single black hole can make a person's fortune. It's a lonely business, fraught with the known and unknown dangers of space. You've outfitted your ship, the M.C.S. Starcross, with the best equipment you could afford. You've put everything into this adventure, and although you've tried before, somehow you feel that this time it will be different.

The ship's computer handles the navigation and routine maintenance functions. You watch the sophisticated mass detector as it incessantly scans the surroundings for unknown masses. To mitigate the tedium of your long journey, you browse the compact tape library, a compendium of human knowledge and culture. But the hum of the ship gradually lulls you to sleep.

As you sleep, you dream of the riches that await you if your quest for a quantum black hole is successful. But you do not suspect that the alarm of your mass detector is about to rouse you from your slumber, but not to confront the longed-for black hole. Your quest has taken an unexpected turn, as you are destined to encounter a gigantic alien spacecraft from the far reaches of the galaxy.
