Super Bubble Bobble is an iconic 1989 MSX game, which has become renowned for its immersive gameplay and graphics. Initially released on the Japan-only MSX platform, the game is based on the original Bubble Bobble from 1986 but features reimagined levels and new game mechanics.
Players take control of either Pop or Bib, two colourful dragon-like creatures, who are armed with bubbles they can use to encase enemies. By then bursting the bubble, the enemy is defeated. As the game progresses, the difficulty is increased with various enemies, items, obstacles, and bosses. Players are tasked with safely and strategically guiding their bubble dragons through the stages, eliminating all foes encountered and rescuing Fairies along the way.
The game rewards those who successfully complete levels with 'bubbles' that are needed to unlock future stages and tally up points at the end of a completed round. Furthermore, players can rack up more points and bonuses by collecting the 'fruits' scattered throughout every stage. Super Bubble Bobble also introduces two-player mode; allowing gamers to battle it out against their friends and traverse the levels together; due to the lengthy levels and narrow openings, two-player mode can prove essential during more advanced stages.
In terms of aesthetics, some levels bring a sizable level of detail and creativity, providing an immersive backdrop of colours and imagery. Boss battles also contribute to a riveting experience, with some of the trickier opponents being sure to challenge even the most skillful gamers.
Even 30 years later, Super Bubble Bobble is still considered to be one of the most engaging MSX title and is rightly so due to the pleasing graphics, engaging gameplay, and the plethora of rewards which the game provides for its dedicated players.
