Swap is an action puzzle video game developed and published by Titus France for the DOS platform in 1992. It was created by French game developer Cyrille Hatier and utilizes a unique diamond-shaped design for its various levels that can challenge even the most experienced gamers.
The objective of the game is to arrange the various shapes that appear on the board, by swapping them amongst each other until a specific pattern is built. To do so, the player must move their cursor around the board and swap the designated sections. Every swap adds ten seconds to the timer, with a minimum of one hundred seconds of time per level. The main obstacle that the players will encounter is the time limit, which is why even a single wrong move can be fatal. If the level isn’t completed before timer runs out, the game ends.
Players can keep the action fresh by selecting various themes such as Hospital or Desert, as well as the difficulty of the level. This makes for a variety of different ways to tackle each level, making a routine play session a new challenge each time. As the levels progress, the player can acquire hidden bonuses that can help them when the goings get toughest.
For the competitive players out there, Swap also includes a Versus mode, which allows two players to play against each other on the same computer. This provides a great platform for family feuds between siblings and friends, as the player with the higher score of exchanged diamonds will prevail. As an added bonus, the game features multiple unlockable characters, which you can collect during your playtime.
The graphical presentation of the game is simple but effective. Its 8-bit style is visually compelling, yet minimalistic. The interface is also concise and user-friendly, allowing for easy navigation of the board and options. All in all, Swap is a fun, yet challenging game that, when played with a group of people, can be an incredibly enjoyable experience.
