Szachista

Szachista is a video game in the strategy genre developed by Seven Stars Multimedia and published by L.K. Avalon originally released in 1997. It is currently playable on Amiga.

As the first 3D shatranj-inspired game, Szachista struck the chess-playing world with aplomb when it was released for the Amiga in 1997. Many enthusiasts lauded its attention to detail; the 3D visuals, then only achievable on high-end machines, lent a tactile feel to the game.

With 18 different pieces and unlimited depth, Szachista offered chessplayers a level of lush graphical immersion like none before it. While the interface may have been complicated for some, the instantaneous nature of the engine allowed for rapid development of strategies.

But Szachista was more than simply a beautiful game. It also provided a unique way to learn and practice the rules of shatranj. Features like unorthodox piece movements, piece capture reminders, and an adjustable skill level - not to mention an entertaining tutorial - meant even novices could experience the wonderful intricacies of the game.

While opponents weren’t real people (unlike later iterations of the game), Szachista did permit for the kind of manipulation of opponents' strategies those who played shatranj had previously only dreamed of. The AI was capable of surprisingly complex play, either in predetermined endgames or more general strategies.

Szachista may be dated now, but it was a truly revolutionary release in its time. Its combination of aesthetic beauty, flexible approach to chess training, and clever opponent AI showed that the computer gaming world really could bring the venerated game into the third dimension. It introduced an entire generation of chess players to shatranj in an innovative and imaginative way.
