Tawara was released in 1984 as a strategy game developed for the MSX console. This was a classic turn-base game that focused on warring factions. Players were put in charge of assembling and commanding their own ‘army’ of four men, leading them through a variety of battles. In these battles, players had to choose between three different strategies, Attack, Retreat, or Ethics.
Players had to employ quick reasoning and strong decision making in order to direct their characters across a variety of terrains and different enemies. To assist in their strategy, they had the help of a compass feature that allowed players to see the layout of their battlefield and the possible trajectories of enemy combatants. Players also had the opportunity to use the environment to their advantage - forests, mountains, plains, and lakes could be used for ambushes or retreats depending on the circumstances.
The four characters in each player’s squad had unique advantages and disabilities. They could be trained in agility and combat, while their specific fighting styles changed depending on the type of terrain they were in. In addition, each character was armed with a different weapon, including bows, swords, lances and shields. An optimal tactic was to combine the best of both characters’ attributes, such as pairing a strong shield-bearer with a powerful archer, to ensure the greatest chance of victory.
Although the game did not have any options for customization or in-depth dialogues between characters, it did provide an entertaining and challenging case of war strategy. Its turn-based approach and attentive design of characters and the environment made it engaging to players, and it quickly gained a following of fans. Despite being released many years ago, Tawara is still a classic among those who owned the MSX console and fans of strategic games.
