Description Tennis
Game Master’s Tennis, released in 1990, brings the essentials of court tennis to the company’s compact handheld system. Matches are presented from a raised, behind-the-player viewpoint, with the court extending toward the far baseline. The player controls a small on-screen competitor positioned near the bottom of the display, while the opposing player occupies the opposite end. A simple court layout, net, sidelines, service boxes, and baselines establish the playing area clearly within the limited screen space. The monochrome presentation gives every element a crisp, easily recognizable appearance.
Movement is handled directly through the Game Master’s directional controls. The player shifts across the baseline to meet incoming shots, then uses the action buttons to serve or return the ball. Timing and positioning are central to successful play: a return made too early or too late can send the ball into the net or beyond the court markings. Shots must also be directed according to the player’s position, making it important to move into line with the ball before attempting a stroke. Serves begin each exchange, and the rally continues until one competitor fails to return the ball legally.
The computer opponent provides a steady challenge by moving into position and sending the ball back across the net. The game’s compact rules and uncluttered controls make it possible to begin a match immediately, while the increasing demand for accurate movement gives repeated games a clear sense of progression. Players must watch the ball carefully as it travels across the court and judge its landing point rather than relying solely on rapid button presses. A successful exchange is represented by the ball crossing the net cleanly, with points awarded when a shot cannot be reached or falls outside the marked boundaries.
Visual detail is necessarily economical, but the stark black-and-white graphics suit the Game Master display and keep the action visible during fast rallies. The court remains fixed while the players and ball provide the movement, producing a straightforward and readable representation of tennis. Sound effects are brief electronic tones used to mark serves, contacts, and important changes in play. These sharp signals supplement the visuals without distracting from the match. With its short loading-free sessions, direct controls, and emphasis on timing, Tennis offers a focused handheld sports experience designed for quick matches or longer attempts to master the court.
