Tetris Plus

Tetris Plus is a video game in the action genre developed by Jaleco Ltd. and published by Jaleco Ltd. originally released in 1996. It is currently playable on SEGA Saturn, Arcade.

Tetris Plus was an elaborative version of the legendary puzzle game Tetris, designed for the SEGA Saturn console in 1996. Players assume the familiar objective of organizing falling blocks into connected groups, which clear out with points when the screen is filled. Despite the similar premise to the original version, the immersive Quartet II engine presents the game in a completely new light with numerous tweaks and perks.

Rich graphics poured out of the Saturn unit, and the bright colour palette didn’t stop at the blocks. Backgrounds show dynamic items like a castle, a dungeon, and a fantasy garden, based on different scenarios with unique collections of music and sound effects, while multilayered animations kept the game continuously inviting.

Not only did Tetris Plus bring the captivating formula of the classic version to a more circular realm of presentation, the game also piled substantial new modes and bonus features onto the action. Just navigating the plethora of competitive challenges can become its own puzzle. In addition, players were able to rack up points via a special “Power Up” system. Performing certain tasks gave the player various powers, such as faster falling blocks and the ability to slow down the speed.

In solo play, the objective is to clear out the blocks in a set amount of time in exchange for bonus rounds and extra lives. These incentives add an extra level of complexity with visual attacks and other factors to consider. Meanwhile, a 2-player competition grants gamers the privilege of deviously sending junk blocks to the opponent, while simultaneously posting up high scores for eternity.

With tons of options for play, Tetris Plus offers its own share of grind for players, regardless of their style. Even casual players can find something here, as even the slightest of adjustments created a whole new experience. By mixing the classic appeal of Tetris with bountiful levels of content, Tetris Plus became one of the best titles by SEGA Saturn.
