The Activision Decathlon

The Activision Decathlon is a video game in the sports genre developed by Activision, Inc. and published by Activision (UK) Limited originally released in 1984. It is currently playable on Commodore 64, Atari 8-bit, ColecoVision.

The Activision Decathlon is an Olympic game series similar to the Epyx game series. Up to four players can compete in the ten different events of a real-life decathlon, either in sequence or individually. Included are the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500-meter run events.

The running events involve a simple joystick movement, which must be balanced with precise button presses to clear the hurdles: colliding with the hurdles or breaking stride causes a loss of momentum and therefore time. In the jumping and throwing tests, you have to gain momentum by shaking the lever and then press the button to throw or jump at the right moment.

For each event, you earn points based on how well you do (it can be based on your running time, or how far you throw the javelin or discus, etc...), and the player with the most points at the end of the decathlon wins the gold medal.
