The Caverns of Freitag

The Caverns of Freitag is a video game in the action genre and published by Muse Software originally released in 1982. It is currently playable on Apple II.

The evil dragon Freitag has taken refuge in a large cave system in the Enchanted Isles. A Thechu warrior must explore the labyrinth, defeat Freitag's minions and finally slay the evil beast, so that the Islands can once again be free.

The Caverns of Freitag is an action-based role-playing game in which the player controls the warrior on his way to slay the dragon. The numerous monsters in the maze can be destroyed using a sword or a bow. However, arrows are limited and must be purchased at an inn with gold left behind by defeated enemies. Also at the inn, the warrior advances in levels and hit points according to the experience gained by killing enemies. In addition to weapons, the warrior can employ a magic spell that doubles his speed, which can only be used to flee from enemies.

The game has three different viewing modes: in standard mode, the screen shows the maze and monsters in detail. You can switch to an overview mode that shows the maze and monsters in a small window and adds detailed character statistics and messages. Finally, a magic map can be used to show a larger section of the maze, with the disadvantage that the monsters are not visible.
