The Endless Night is a top-down adventure game that begins without a backstory, as the protagonist wakes up with amnesia in a pitch-black world. His only goal is to discover who he is and unravel the mystery behind The Endless Night.
The only controls are the arrow keys to move around. For most of the game, the screen is completely black and only the player's movement is illuminated, as he or she stumbles forward through a labyrinthine map, occasionally bumping into objects or someone to talk to. At the end, if the player stumbles upon it, there is a town where he can get a flashlight that allows him to fully see the map. From this point on, the game becomes fairly straightforward, searching for objects on the map and completing fetch quests for villagers to advance the plot.
