The Last V8

The Last V8 is a video game in the racing / driving genre and published by M.A.D. originally released in 1985. It is currently playable on Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Atari 8-bit.

Seven years have passed since World War III, and only now do you dare to leave your safe haven to investigate what has become of the surface world. You set off in your specially equipped vehicle, The Last V8, only to discover that the outside world is more hostile than you would have expected. Your task is now (as recommended by a digitized voice at the beginning of each level) simply to get back to base in the shortest possible time.

The Last V8 is an overhead driving game in which you must drive along narrow roads without hitting anything, and with a strict deadline for your arrival at base. This is complicated somewhat by the fact that you only have a narrow strip of screen space to see where you're driving; two-thirds of the screen is devoted to instruments (speed readout, radiation level, and mission objectives). The steering method is not the usual Sprint one; instead, just pull the joystick in the direction you want to go, pulling in the opposite direction in case you need to slow down.

All versions, except the C128 version, have two levels. The first takes place in a quasi-pastoral landscape in which you must reach the scientific base, after which you must find your way back to your own base while avoiding radiation sources. A distance reading will help you find the correct route.
