The Rift is a decent little vertical shooter in the same vein as Space Invaders. The game was never sold, but was given as a 'gift' to people who registered Pop Software's shareware products.
There's not much I can say about the game, except that the enemies look pretty good, with shadows giving good 3D illusions. Even enemy shots look 3D, making the game one of the best looking freeware shooters of the era. Too bad the background graphics are minimal - but then again, what should we expect from a freeware game from 1992?:)
I find levels 1-3 too easy and level 4 too difficult (and almost incomprehensible), so diehard SHMUP fans shouldn't expect the game to last them hours.
All in all, The Rift is a nice little diversion and a rarity worth keeping, but its relatively short length and limited gameplay keep it from being a Top Dog.
