Description The Spider

The Spider is an MSX game originally released in 1983. Developed and published by Brazilian company TecToy, the game focuses on a spider trying to save its beloved children who have been kidnapped by the evil villain, Dr. Tarantula.

Players assume the role of the spider, making their way through75 maze-like levels filled with enemies and traps. Every level of The Spider requires players to traverse its treacherous paths, all while gathering pills, gold, and other valuable items. Enemies feature traditional creatures like scorpions and bats, as well as more obscure creatures, such as caterpillars and giant ticks.

The game’s controls are straightforward, with the directional buttons controlling the spider’s movement and a single button to shoot webs. The aim of each level is to locate and rescue all of the spider’s children before progressing to the next one. Players also need to keep an eye on their lives, as taking too many hits from enemies will cause them to lose one.

The Spider has a vibrant 8-bit aesthetic, with cartoonish visuals and a catchy soundtrack. Its difficulty level is quite appropriate for its time as well; while some levels may seem insurmountable to newcomers, those willing to take their time and master the game’s mechanics will surely find success.

Despite now being 36 years old, The Spider is still a fun and engaging MSX game. Its unique approach to platforming and rescuing make it unique and highly entertaining. In addition, its lighthearted atmosphere and visuals make it perfect for players of all ages.
