Theseus and the Minotaur

Theseus and the Minotaur is a video game in the role-playing (rpg) genre developed by TSR Hobbies, Inc. and published by TSR Hobbies, Inc. originally released in 1982. It is currently playable on Apple II.

The player controls the actions of Theseus, an Athenian prince of ancient Greece, as he wanders through a randomly generated three-dimensional maze (under the user's parameters) in search of the hideous Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull monster, in order to slay the unnatural creature. Obstacles in the maze can include secret doors and 'mirror maze' portions, as well as numerous monsters (snakes, in particular, are such a common opponent that a specific key is dedicated to dealing with them). The player starts with nothing more than his fists, which are enough to defeat the weaker inhabitants of the maze, but stronger weapons are needed to defeat the Minotaur. (Triumph is only achieved after the monster is killed and the player leaves the maze from his original entry point, although it can be exited at any time, whether the minotaur is still alive or not. )

The game is three-dimensional not only because the player navigates the maze from a first-person perspective, but also because navigating the maze involves ascending and descending through holes in the floors and ceilings.
