Description Through the Looking Glass

Through the Looking Glass is a graphic adventure for the Macintosh that places the player in a curious mirrored realm entered from a booklike portal. The game unfolds through a series of connected locations—hallways, studies, corridors of reflected stone, and glassed-over chambers—each presented as a small windowed scene with interactive hotspots and status information beside it. The player’s objective is to progress deeper into the mirror world by finding the correct objects, triggering the right switches, and decoding the spatial logic suggested by repeated reflections.

Movement and interaction are handled with a combination of on-screen selection and keyboard input. The cursor can be used to examine prominent features such as doors, shelves, frames, locked cases, and mirrored panels. Many objects can be picked up, carried in an inventory, examined for clues, and then used elsewhere to open paths or alter the environment. Several puzzles depend on mirror relationships: objects may appear to “swap sides” when a reflective surface is activated, and certain passages are accessible only after the player has manipulated a room’s symmetry element, such as a rotating panel or sliding glass plate.

As the player explores, key information is presented through brief textual prompts tied to what the cursor points at, along with event messages that confirm actions or warn when an attempt fails. The game emphasizes observation—what can be seen directly, what can only be inferred from a reflection, and what changes after each interactive step. Difficulty typically comes from assembling the correct sequence of actions, ensuring the right item is used in the right location, and recognizing when a mirror effect has altered the layout.

Visually, Through the Looking Glass uses the Macintosh’s monochrome capabilities with crisp bitmap scenes and high-contrast silhouettes for figures and objects. Reflections are represented with simple, consistent transformations—flipped shapes, repeated motifs, and mirrored room geometry—so that the player can track what has changed. Transitions between areas are clean and immediate, keeping attention on spatial relationships rather than on elaborate animation.

Sound is kept light and functional: short chimes and soft tones accompany successful interactions, while unsuccessful attempts generate brief tonal cues. The audio, paired with the game’s steady visual presentation, supports a methodical style of play. The overall experience is one of quiet discovery and careful problem-solving, with each new chamber encouraging the player to treat mirrors as both environment and mechanism.
