Description Tiles

Tiles released in 1992 was one of the most innovative DOS games of its time. Developed by San Francisco based company New World Computing, this puzzle game quickly gained popularity upon its release. It was an instant hit among DOS gamers, who were mesmerized by its simple yet addictive gameplay.

The concept of Tiles was simple - players had to arrange a series of colored tiles on a grid in order to clear them from the board. The catch was that the tiles could only be moved in a straight line and had to be of the same color in order to be cleared. This seemingly easy gameplay became quite challenging as players progressed through the game and encountered different obstacles such as unmovable black tiles and locked tiles which required a key to be unlocked.

One of the most unique features of Tiles was its ability to support multiplayer mode. This was a groundbreaking feature for DOS games at that time. Players could either compete against each other or work together to complete levels. This added a new level of excitement and social aspect to the game, making it a popular choice for LAN parties and gaming conventions.

The game also featured a vibrant and visually appealing color scheme, with each level having a different background to keep players engaged. The background music, while repetitive, added to the overall experience of the game. The controls were simple and easy to use, making it accessible for players of all ages.

Tiles had 100 levels, each one more challenging than the last. This ensured that players would keep coming back for more, as the game was not easily beatable in one sitting. The difficulty level of the game increased gradually, keeping players on their toes and providing a sense of accomplishment upon completing a particularly tricky level.

Despite being a DOS game, Tiles had a relatively modern and appealing look. The graphics were sharp and the animations were smooth, especially for a game released in 1992. Its success prompted New World Computing to release a sequel, Tiles Extreme, in 1994. This version featured even more challenging levels and improved graphics.

Even after almost three decades, Tiles remains a beloved DOS game among gamers. Its simplistic yet captivating gameplay, coupled with its multiplayer mode and challenging levels, makes it a timeless classic. It continues to be fondly remembered by DOS gamers and serves as an inspiration for similar puzzle games in modern times.
