Tommy's Plates

Tommy's Plates is a video game in the puzzle genre developed by Tommy's Toys and published by Tommy's Toys originally released in 1989. It is currently playable on DOS.

Tommy's Plates is a shareware word game based on US license plates. The example cited in the game documentation is PPNRTYM, which stands for 'Peace In Our Time', with two P's standing for Peace, N - In, R - Our and TYM standing for Time. Similarly, DUU12C1 stands for 'Do you want to see one'. In the game, these riddles are accompanied by a clue, as in these examples, again taken from the documentation:JMEKGNE: Clue - A movie thug: Answer - Jimmy CagneILKKSND: Clue - A big thug: Answer - I'll kick sand, or I'll kick sandNh: Clue - A milkman: Answer - Half And HalfThe game is played in a series of rounds, in the preliminary rounds players are given a clue and shown two vanity plates, they must first press their action key, choose which plate matches the clue and then enter the word or phrase that the plate represents. If they get it right, they win $100 and the chance to place an additional letter on the hard plate shown at the top of the screen. They then have the opportunity to guess what the hard plate represents.
The first team to win two preliminary rounds will have the opportunity to play the bonus round. The single player game dispenses with the preliminary rounds and consists only of the bonus round.

The game is controlled entirely with the keyboard. It has basic sound effects and command line switches to start the game with the sound off and to force the display in color or monochrome .
