Tommy's Towers

Tommy's Towers is a video game in the strategy genre developed by Tommy's Toys and published by Tommy's Toys originally released in 1986. It is currently playable on DOS.

Tommy's Towers is a shareware single player game that is a combination of chess and wargames.

The basic idea is that here on earth we play chess on an 8x8 board with sixteen pieces on each side. Tommy is an alien and where he is from we play on a 20x50 board with three hundred pieces on each side, which is apparently a more realistic battle simulation.

As in chess, there are rules governing the movement of each piece, what each piece can take and how it is taken. Alien pieces are used in addition to the traditional ground pieces, the full set comprising pawns, shields, kings, rooks, bishops, queens, jacks, dukes, earls, knights archers, princes, princesses, canons, red queens, red knights and wizards. The rooks are the most powerful pieces on the board, hence the name of the game, they have an unlimited range of movement and can capture any other piece.
There are also bridges, moats and hills, these are 'passive pieces' and although they affect the actions of other pieces, a bridge can only be crossed in the direction in which it is placed and a cannon cannot shoot across a hill, they themselves do not capture other pieces.

Like most Tommy games, it uses character graphics and is controlled entirely with the keyboard. It has basic sound effects and command line switches to start the game with sound off and to force a color or monochrome display. In addition, game files can be saved and edited, and there is a rewind/rewind function.
