Trivial Pursuit

Trivial Pursuit is a video game in the strategy genre developed by Horn Abbot, Ltd. and published by Horn Abbot, Ltd. originally released in 1989. It is currently playable on DOS.

One of the first games made under the new 'Leisure Genius' label after Virgin acquired Mastertronic to form the 'Virgin Mastertronic' division, Trivial Pursuit continues the line of translations of famous Mastertronic board games . . . . including their notorious lack of quality.

While fans of the board game will be happy to play it if there are no friends in sight, their hopes for a faithful conversion will be cruelly dashed when they discover that there's no way to type in the answers to the questions. That's right: the whole ingenious purpose of the game, the one point that distinguishes true scholars from trivia junkies, has been reduced to a ridiculously simple concept of answering 'yes' or 'no' to the answer provided by the computer ('is your answer correct?' it asks nonchalantly). Although every other aspect of the game (right down to the color wheel) is meticulously modeled, and you can play against 3 other human players, the challenge is basically non-existent.

It is of interest only as a historical curiosity or as a tutorial for beginners. Pulling out the old board game and getting a real group of friends together is a much better idea than playing this poor version. If you like the board game, you'd be better off with Domark's superior Deluxe Trivial Pursuit (also on this site), or Hasbro's 1999 CD-ROM update.
